After months of financial woe for THQ, the publisher finally has something to smile about, with news that it’s premier game continues to sell well.

Saint’s Row The Third has shifted 4.25 million copies, meaning the franchise’s total sales have smashed the 11 million mark. It’s certainly an impressive figure for a series that had a lot of obstacles – including the fact that the first iteration was exclusive to XBOX, and not least the derision it received for being ‘GTA-lite’.

The publisher had this to say in it’s latest financial report:

“Saints Row is firmly established as THQ’s most successful owned-IP franchise. It generated the highest digital revenue of any console title in the company’s history.

We exceeded our initial fourth quarter guidance for net sales, earnings and cash position, driven by high quality core games with a significant digital component, which is the blueprint for our future.

We have made significant changes to our business, and are on track to execute our strategy of delivering quality connected core gaming experiences, beginning with the sequel to the award-winning Darksiders in August.”

You may remember that THQ‘s money troubles came one after another earlier this year. Now though it looks like they’re hopefully managing to get back on track. And it’s all down to giant ‘adult toys’ and octopus guns…

It seems that a list of vehicles available in Grand Theft Auto V have apperared in the Max Payne 3 files.

A user on the GTA Forums claims they were found in an MP3 file called “gta vehicles.ide”. The list shows 95 different vehicles; split into 48 cars, 25 boats, 10 helicopters, 9 trains, 5 bikes and a plane. The full list follows:

Today saw the release of a new standalone download for gamers who have pre-ordered the highly anticipated Hitman Absolution.

Hitman: Sniper Challenge is a completely seperate experience from the main game, and is probably the most creative and interesting use yet of a pre-order bonus.

The game will have an online leaderboard, with competitions for prizes. The sniper rifle featured in the download (Kazo TRG) and any upgrades you earn, can also be transferred over the main game if you’d like.

Here’s the official line from IO Interactive:

“From a balcony overlooking a roof-top party, you are tasked with taking out Richard Strong, Jr., CEO of Stallion Armaments, along with his entire staff of bodyguards. Skilled players will capitalize on score multipliers, discover secret extras, unlock equipment upgrades, and marvel at the many creative ways one can discretely dispose of a body while they work to fulfil their contract in the most efficient way possible.

Agent 47 is the best in the business so it seemed appropriate to create the best pre-order reward possible for our fans. Hitman: Sniper Challenge is a way of thanking customers and giving them a taste of Agent 47’s skills from the moment they pre-order the game.”

The BBC will be releasing a dedicated app on both PlayStation 3 and Sony Bravia Smart TV‘s, with “more devices to follow”.

BBC iPlayer has been on the PS3 for a while, but this new app has one major difference – it’s live. The service will begin in time for Wimbledon (which commences June 25th) and will offer live HD streaming, on top of the on-demand content.

The experience will be custom-built for the app though, so there should in theory be an advantage over watching on TV. For instance, there’ll be various camera angles available at once, or even multiple events on screen.

I can’t think of another dedicated sports service such as this, so it will be interesting to see what they make of it. BBC (or ‘the beeb’ as they’re affectionately known) have already stated they will offer the Olympics and Formula 1 on the app, as well as the aforementioned tennis major. Here’s hoping they also broadcast EURO 2012 this summer – with the technology, they could create a service that rivals Sky‘s coverage for quality.

Of course, because it’s the BBC, the app will have to be free; and for obvious reasons, it is UK-only. Here’s the official line from Sony on what you can expect from the new software:

“The application has been designed specifically for the ‘big-screen’ to deliver an ultimate home entertainment experience.  The principal purpose is to deliver live sporting events where there are simultaneous activities or multiple camera angles, making it an ideal fixture to get front row seats to watch Formula 1 and major sporting events coming to London this summer, including Wimbledon and the Olympics.

With the BBC capturing highlights of the key sporting events over the summer, the app will provide UK consumers with an incredible mix of both live and on-demand sporting events from the UK and around the world, straight to their living rooms at the simple touch of a button. Throughout the London 2012 Olympics Games, the BBC Sport app will give audiences access to 2,500 hours of content and up to 24 simultaneous live events, all in HD.

In addition to the current BBC red-button function consumers with the BBC Sport app will have access to more interactive content and extra coverage of future sporting events.

The app’s user interface will be familiar to consumers who currently use the BBC Sport website, it will be simple to navigate using the standard remote control, Media Remote smartphone application or PlayStation 3 controller.”

Finally, Edd Uzzell of Sony’s Bravia brand, had this to say:

“Televised sport is one of the biggest rating wins for broadcasters.  This truly is a killer app and will provide a substantial amount of additional sporting content that you can’t get through the current broadcasting model.  We strongly believe this will kick-start more widespread usage of the connected television offering, providing sport fans using the app with in-depth big-screen coverage of their favorite events.  The app will also have extensive penetration in the UK thanks to its availability on PlayStation 3.”

Contrary to the news we brought you at the back end of last week, it seems Test Drive developer Eden Games is actually still alive.

The reports from a multitude of sources on Friday seemed to be confirmed, but Atari have now dismissed it as off-the-mark speculation. Here’s what they had to say in a clarifying statement:

“Our earnings statement contained a report about the divestment of Eden Studios.

We want to make it clear that the studio has not closed and that we will continue to support the console and PC games of Eden Studios, notably Test Drive Unlimited 2, while this process is underway.

The divestment is in line with our previously stated strategy of exploiting our popular intellectual property library on mobile devices, where he have seen strong initial success, and via online games and licensing.”

Just as with Bioshock Infinite last week, the upcoming Tomb Raider reboot has been delayed until next year. Originally, Square Enix planned a Q4 2012 launch, but it will now be Q1 2013.

Unlike the aforementioned Bioshock however, fans will not be as overly disappointed as the game will still be presented at E3 next month.

The announcement was made today on developer Crystal Dynamics‘ official forums:

“We’re doing things that are completely new to Tomb Raider in this game and the additional development time will allow us to put the finishing touches into the game and polish it to a level that you deserve. We believe this is the right choice and I guarantee it will be worth the wait. The game is looking amazing and we can’t wait to show it to everyone at E3 in a few weeks.”

I for one am certainly looking forward to the game, after an impressive showing at E3 last summer and an interesting new direction they are taking the series to.

I’m curious though as to whether there is a genuine need for more development time, or if this delay is purely for commercial reasons – to avoid competing with the other big hitters in the holiday season.

Just as the UK arm has managed to claw it’s way back from the retail depths, GAME Australia has fallen into administration.

The retail giant has suffered in recent years due to the growing online market and a reluctance to alter their pricing strategy. However, it’s not until recently that any of the non-UK branches have looked to be in jeopardy. It will be interesting now to see whether an investor will similarly save the Aussie stores from hitting the wall.

In the UK, GAME briefly stopped stocking certain games from the likes of EA and Nintendo when they first entered administration, but ultimately, the consumer wasn’t really harmed. That’s not the case in Australia though.

According to Kotaku, as well as not selling Diablo III, GAME will not be refunding any pre-orders. Meaning many fans have stumped up the cash in advance, but will not be receiving the game. Astonishingly, this seems to be completely legal.

We’ll be sure to keep you posted on any significant movements in this situation; it’s sure to get worse before it gets better, and will likely be a long drawn-out saga just like GAME UK.

SEGA have confirmed Virtua Fighter 5: Final Showdown will cost $14.99 on the PSN. The publisher also gave it a release date of June 5th.

The game is said to be the “definitive version” of VF5 and features a “complete overhaul” with a refined game engine. For a price of under $15/£10, it seems to be a pretty great bargain. Personally, I was a big fan of the original when it was initially released back in 2007.

If you do want some of the bells and whistles though, there will be the typical array of downloadable extras. Each of the 19 characters will have a customisation pack available for $4.99/£3.59.
