PS4 will include 4K TV support – but only for movies

Sony have announced that the PlayStation 4 will output 4K video; though not for games.

Speaking to the press this morning, SCE‘s Worldwide Studios head Shuhei Yoshida confirmed the news:

“The PS4 supports 4K output, but only for photos and videos — not games. PS4 games do not work on 4K.”

Although Sony have been pushing the 4K resolution over the past year, it probably shouldn’t come as a surprise that PS4 games will not utilise the extra pixels. With PlayStation pushing digital distribution as well as cloud streaming, achieving 1080p is a challenge in itself; whether relating to download times or a lag-free stream respectively. Added to this is the fact that, whilst PS3 comfortably supports 1080p games, many developers continue to only deliver 720p.

In the same interview, Yoshida also told of Sony‘s current stance on 3D:

“It’s not a focus. But it does do it better. The basic capability is higher so more games will run at 1080p at 60 frames so it’s an easier and better experience when you watch on 3D TV.

3D was a big thing a couple of years ago — we made it a big thing because it was lead by the consumer electronics side of Sony and we liked what we could do on PS3 using 3D stereoscopic.

But now the consumer electronics side of Sony, or all of the companies have shifted focus from 3D TV to something else, so if they’re not talking about it, why would we?”

I did not know that! And that’s FINE with me because 4K? That’s 10 years before I can afford one. I have a 1080i 32″, 125LB CRT! HA! 4K is not in my immediate future.

Amidst and amongst that, PS4 should have betwixt 720i, 720p, 1080i, 1080p and that’s the way. It will NOT support 4320p games for PS4. Does it hurt?
