‘Black Ops II’ includes texture installation option

The PS3 version of Call of Duty: Black Ops II will feature an option to install textures to the HDD.

Game director David Vonderhaar confirmed the news on the title’s official forums. He explains that Treyarch made the decision in order to reduce stress on the console’s Blu-Ray drive, rather than for any performance enhancement:

This is one the fans having been demanding for a bit. Black Ops 2 has an option to ‘Install Textures to HDD’.

When we explained to PS3 folks that installing to the HDD wouldn’t neccessarily give us any significant performance gains, they explained back that the issue is they play so much it puts constant stress on the Blu-ray drive and wears them out. Roger that.

It’s a non-trivial amount of HDD space to install all the textures. I don’t want to get into exactly numbers because anything can, and does change during development.

You don’t have to install to enjoy the game. We still pre-cache like we did on Black Ops.”

Black Ops II, the series’ first foray into future warfare, will launch on November 13th.

You don’t have an estimate for how much space it takes up right now? While I have at least 100+ GB of space, it wouldn’t hurt for me to know some info upfront, even if it is indeed subject to change.
